A few years ago, my mother experienced a traumatic rollover car accident on her way from work. She attended therapy and was diagnosed with severe depression and PTSD. Her job came to a halt as she needed to recover. To care for her, I began cooking daily dinners for my family and, being only twelve years old, it was my first time taking this role. At first, I found myself struggling to find my rhythm in the kitchen; I lacked skill and could never think of what dishes to make. However, I was determined to support my mother during her recovery and I used online recipes and food blogs to guide me in my culinary process. Slowly, with the aid of these recipes, my skills got sharper and I was able to cook healthy and nourishing meals for my mother and family. After a few months, my mother gained strength, prompting her return to her job.
Seeing my mother suffer from her mental health issues inspired me to developed Meals for the Mind in hope to assist others who are battling mental health issues through food. Similarly to my experience with food blogs, Meals for the Mind can be a resource for those who are caring for loved ones through nutrition. My focus was to create simple recipes with whole ingredients that contain beneficial nutrients for mental well-being for anyone to make and share.
